More wants than money...

When you think about it, as we go through life and we take the opportunity to pause for a while, we would recognize that we have more wants than we have money. Why is that?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I made the observation that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs stood the test of the environment. For the first time in my personal history, I was actually able to see people, myself included, relate to this pyramid as the lock down took place. We were content to functioning at the level of our basic needs.

People had cheques that were totally useless since the banks we not accepting them; and that is when they were open. For the most part, as a people, we became creative in our survival. We noticed the laws of living and their consequences/benefits. Maybe, for the first time in the lives of many, we stopped to pay attention to how our lives were impacted, and really gave thought to our circumstances.

To put in a nutshell what the news said, the challenges faced at the most basic physiological level of needs cause many to have experiences at the safety level that no human wants to experience.

In an effort to regain a sense of "normal", governments the world over sought to integrate practices that would enable people to regain some of their lost footing in life as it relates to the attending of their psychological needs.

Was it too fast, where we are seeking to build on an already weak foundation as it related to the fulfillment of the basic needs of people? Only time would tell. There is mixed opinions about that process with even the arguments being put forward to the crisis of the pandemic was for a disease that isn't real. The behaviors of many speak to their coping mechanisms that they have. It provides a more clear insight as to what some people may have had to experience when they were locked off from the rest of the world and having to deal with the train of thought some people had. Their experiences could have been no less than horrible.

One thing that is being slowly realized; normal has changed, whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

This post COVID-19 environment is going to really test our ability to be our brother's keeper. It is going to let us see the harsh reality that as a people we are going to have more wants than money.

People are fascinating to observe

I'm sure that at some point you've heard someone say that they wished they could be a fly on the wall. It's usually because they want an opportunity to just observe. Looking at people and questioning certain behaviors can give rise to more questions. It can lead you to see motivators that you would not believe could have existed in the situations where they occurred.

Some behaviors observed are:

  • jealousy, gossip, selfishness, scheming, dislike without a reason, violence, following the masses and the list can go on with these more prevalent negative behaviors.
  • Alternately, we see though more infrequently, generosity, calm, patience, love, passion, concern
The situations within which we see these behaviors, good and bad, demonstrated are dynamic. Siblings having a serious quarrel can become quite defensive of each other against a third party who may intervene for whatever reason.

How does this translate to our work lives?

All too often, we see disputes within organizations, and between organizations and customers that need not be so. Many situations can escalate to unnecessary proportions just because one part of or both parties did not seek to understand the other persons' perspective. The result is conflict.

If we were to look back over a lifetime at the conflicts that we were involved in, what would we think of our behavior? Did we really handle that situation well? or could we have done better? Why do we so easily get drawn into situations of conflict?

Let's make a conscious effort, all readers, to be aware and not be so easily duped into becoming involved in a conflict.

Really?!?! - Examples of Customer Interactions

We have a long way to go when we are going to be talking about customer service. The thing is I'm making reference to as a region, not any one island. We are in serious trouble if we're to be globally competitive.

To get an idea of what I mean, have a look at the following scenarios.

  • While being served at a restaurant attached to a hotel, the server at the table was more than a little inexperienced in her role as a waitress. It seemed like the tables of customers were a bother to her and it showed in her attitude. She got orders wrong, spilled the food, and when serving wine actually created a storm in the wine glass with the sound effects of thunder. The glass was noisily placed on the table with the wine sloshing around inside the bowl of the glass. She didn't know who the party comprised of, neither did she care.
  • Another restaurant and bar attached to a hotel, the male server on this occasion tried to communicate mentally, he came up to the inside of the bar where a large party was seated, put his hands in both pockets and hoped the beverage orders would in some way make their way to his head. He carried an attitude since he was witnessed being taken to task for the poorly concocted drinks he made and tried to serve. An opportunity to correct/improve his night and those of the patrons forever gone.
  • The taxi driver who is anxious to bring you from the airport so he can get a fare and complete his daily work by midday. Reeked of perspiration, admittedly it was a hot day, and when asked about how to get from the hotel to a particular destination suggest it was in walking distance. When the trip took place later in the day, it was a 15-minute trek up and down steep winding roads. Really? Leaving a card would not mean that you would be called again, especially since you don't know your own country. Broken trust is not easily repaired.
All experiences were not unpleasant, but for those making an effort, we can only encourage them to continue doing so. They are the difference makers. We have met some people that though untrained, had outstanding personalities that made them a joy to interact with on each occasion. You actually looked forward to seeing them and though you had to spend money, you realized the value of doing so.

Perhaps our myopic view of who is our customer, often emphasized by the tourism industry has come home to roost. The old definitions which so clearly depicted what a tourist looks like have created a callousness in our minds as a region, making us numb to the realities of the real hospitality. Dulling our senses where we miss opportunities to serve right before us, and in many cases losing earnings that those who require service would be more than willing to pay us for.

It's time that we move beyond the service for a reward, and rekindle our values of hospitality where we are really nice to our guests, where ever they are from. Remembering individuals and not looking at them as niches, targets, and all the other terms that marketing has allowed us to label them. People the world over want to be made to feel special and valued. Often they don't get it at home, which they work so hard to maintain year round.

Music in Business

While I'm not an expert in music, I know great music when I hear it. Not knowing the names of all the artistes was never something that bothered me. Just recently I realized that I was feeling quite bogged down with all the work that I had to do. So I did something that I hadn't done in so long that it was becoming rare; I put one some music I had on my computer, leaned back and closed my eyes for a while.

It wasn't to sleep, but then I realized that the classical music I was listening to had an invigorating effect on me. Wanting to get my assignment done, I turned on the noise cancelling feature on my headset and listened a bit more. The effect was something worth noting, answers to challenges I had just poured forth. I reached for my notepad (the original) and my pencil to begin noting down the thoughts that were coming to mind. The solutions came almost effortlessly.

After some time of listening to the classics I then switched to the reggae / dancehall genre. Here's what I found, the confidence to implement the programs I thought up grew within me. With all scenarios carefully thought out the best paths of implementation came about. Hmmmm, two different genre and with very different results. I then experimented with other genre to see that impact they would have and though my study was not a formal one, I found that the results were all different and brought gratification in different ways.

One thing was certain, as we get older, we have gotten too lazy, forgetting the steps that we took when younger when we acted as we couldn't fail. As we aged, we became conformist to our detriment. This caged thinking may have held us up, stopping us from accelerating to the success levels we desired in our youth.

Takeaways include: listen to music of all kinds with appreciation, dance when you can (it's exercise and cheaper than the gyms), the classics auger well for creativity and focus, reggae for boosting confidence, soca / calypso for lightening the mood and relieving stress, and R&B coupled with other genres for relaxation and environmental changes even if its only on a mental level. Gospel helps reconnect with our creator and provides grounding.

Don't neglect the importance of music in your life. It can very well help you find the rhythm that you have naturally, and perhaps buried. Reconnect with your dreams, goals, and mission for your lives. You owe it to yourselves remembering; music in life and certainly music in business.

Dun Wuk [Vagrant Life Rule]

This is going to be the lament of some people over the next couple of months. Charley was no exception. He ran a business and tried to do everything by the book and yet was feeling overwhelmed. No matter what he did, he just didn't seem to win. All the obstacles seemed to be stacked against him. What did Charley experience?

  • Non paying clients. No matter how much the clients came with an emergency and begged him to do the work; offering at times to pay significantly more than necessary to get the work done. The unified problem was that once the work was done, so what the interest in paying.
  • Excessive taxation. Like PAYE [pay as you earn - based on what you earned], PFWYE [penalized for what you earn - an incremental tax], NYSI [Now you see it - for social security], VAST [ Value Added Still Taxing - computed on the value of the inputs], Property Taxes and Road Taxes; coupled with the recently Environmental tax - yes you pay to be living in a taxing environment. If a calculation was done, we - the working class, would probably get to keep 3 cents of every dollar. Then there's a CESS on gas so that you must cease driving and catch public transportation as you can't afford to drive in an already expensive environment.
  • Policy on how government can raise revenue to do its work is not only based on taxation, but the information used to set these taxes are based on the ridiculous things like what the populous spend their money on - rims, hair extensions, money spent on beautification. There are NO incentives to establish a business. It hardly makes sense to work as an employee since you are basically penalized for working.
Charley has decided that he dun wuk. [No more working for Charley]; he's going to become a vagrant. Why?

  • There's no tax on begged revenues - standard nor incremental
  • Risks are low and rent is free
  • Food can be made available if you like what's on the free menus.
  • There's no burden on society since your society changes as you move around
  • You don't have to maintain books, since no one thinks you are capable of doing so.
  • Through all the changing scenes of life is more than a hymn. It's a way of life.
So long Charley, and best of luck with your decision!

Too much Stress....will never stop our SUCCESS!

We live in the islands of the Caribbean - a place where people come to relax and recoup.  Yet there's an alarming reality of the people who actually live here.  We're too stressed!

What do I mean?

Let's break it down into groups of people living in the Caribbean. You will realize that though we live here, it can only be classified as an existence; bearing little resemblance to what others envisage as the lifestyles we experience.

There's something about the islands, that people of other lands would classify us as rich. Yet we don't see ourselves that way. Is it that we take too much for granted? Too many of us don't know how to swim. We only know the route to and from work. We don't get to visit our family, and nowadays don't even know the younger and older members of the family.

The islands are expensive. Living in the islands requires money and know how. If you have little money, you better have know how, since these skills are necessary to eke out a livelihood. We have to pay at least twice as much to be on par with those in other countries; and this goes for goods and services.

This constant hustle to survive is taking its toll on island life. Too much time at work, often in sedentary roles, is contributing to the increase in non-communicable diseases - diabetes, hypertension, to name a few. The high costs of living mean that we now have more month than money - a very real situation for many people living in the Caribbean. Apart from working in a job, one often has to have a sideline business - making items for sale, growing food stuff inclusive of livestock, or having a skill such as cutting hair, trimming hedges, making craft, making clothes, and the list can go on.

Despite the sea breezes, the coconut water, the rum, flying fish and other Caribbean goodies - when others come here to work; they quickly realize one thing - We Work Hard for What We Want! Though things are touch economically, we still want to experience what it's like on the side of the wealthy and will work to buy accessories for our cars, hair, bodies, homes and experiences. Life is short and we want the best!

Stress...bring it on. It will never defeat someone from the islands! We are born to succeed! We are winners!

Take stock and revamp

When you're doing business for any length of time, it's easy for some things to fall through cracks. What do I mean?

  • You deviate from your planned/established procedures
  • Damaging behaviours creep in, especially when taken for granted that it's a one off experience
  • Your systems are not really systems, only an ad hoc set of behaviours clumped together
What do you do?
  • You will feel overwhelmed
  • You will experience the frustration of not truly making progress
  • Stress levels will increase in all facets of your life - you get the picture
STOP AND TAKE STOCK
  • Examine what you're doing and the results you're getting
  • Identify where changes need to be made; get help if you need to
  • Make the changes, and then evaluate to see if they're working
Here's what you'll find
  • You may become more organized achieving more in less time
  • Your stress levels will decline
  • You will feel more in control of what you're doing and what you wish to achieve
  • Ever so slight, you'll start to experience some successes
  • Stopping and taking stock often enough will even result in your becoming a bigger success than you've ever been
Don't take my word for it. Try it for yourselves. You owe it to yourselves, your family, and your business; whatever it may be. Begin to take steps today to improve the quality of your living.

Life Happens...

The days are going by so quickly, that getting on here just to do a quick post seems to be a challenge. Sure... more experienced bloggers will say, you have to schedule the time. However I'm telling you, it's just crazy how time is going by. When was the last time you had time to just stop, observe, and realize a couple of things?

I remember my last vacation like it was yesterday. Literally, days are going so quickly, I can remember things that took place 5 years ago like it was yesterday. Thing is every time I think about going on vacation, my workload increases significantly. It's like clients think I'm not going to come back. Some of my colleagues say that in order to bump revenues up, maybe we should constantly think of going on vacation. Though it gives me a chuckle, I sometimes wonder if they may be on to something.

Over the past number of months, I've been seeing people going through all kinds of changes. Is it all financial? No. But many seem to be the spin off of financial circumstances.

There are many people who are in the following situations:

  • More month than money
  • More ideas than available resources
  • Living pay cheque to pay cheque
  • Financial strains due to family situations - death, life, marriage, divorce, growing children, aging parents, challenges that come with the job, challenges that come from being without a job, the list goes on
How are we as a people coping? This atmosphere of busy-ness seems to creating a life / lifestyle that keeps us, as a people, on the treadmill. So can we do about it?

Every now and again, we need to stop and recreate.

What is it that we are seeking? What keeps us going at this frantic pace? What is it that keeps so many people up at night? Surely, it can't be anything new as this seems to have been happening for ages.

Are we doing it for - Honor?

I then did some research from a biblical perspective. It's easy nowadays with the online access to e-bibles and found the following:
  • "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you..Exo 20:12
  • After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, "Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! rev 19:1
  • Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably.Heb 13:18
There are many more passage on honor, but these stood out with me.

Are we honoring honoring of father and mother as commanded that we do in Exo 20:12? Are we functioning under the shadow of the almighty so that we experience not only the salvation, but the glory and honor and power of God? How can we be close and not be affected? if we aren't affected than are we close enough? Are our lives honorable? Put another way, if we looked at ourselves from the outside, would we want to be in the company of ourselves?

What do I mean? Many of us use these words to describe ourselves and our situations:
  • stressed, rinsed out, beat, lick up, under the weather, etc.
We behave as if we are in total control and are not accountable for the way we live. We we do realize accountability, it seems that we prefer to acknowledge what other people think rather than what God thinks of us.

If you need to recapture some measure of honor in your life, why not look in the bible at the examples that are within the word. Remove the constant panic and apprehensive by reading all of the Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth and really getting personal; knowing the contents for yourself.

Once, I had a picture of God asking me "What have you done for me lately?", like you I first thought that was Janet Jackson's song, then I realize who's the composer. I decided to get busy, cause it wasn't about all the activity that I thought it was - going to church, singing in the choir, leading classes. None of that stuff mattered. Was I leading the life that God would be proud of what what counted?

  1. Was I cussing and swearing all the time?
  2. Was I setting a great example for the children around?
  3. Was I being an excellent example for the surrounding adults?
  4. How was I ministering to those who observed me but never said a word to me?
  5. Am I experiencing the life worthy of Kingdom Living?
I got a "NO!"

I also got a here's what you need to do - Get to know me personally through my word and you will experience the lifestyle of Kingdom Living.

Does it mean that we won't have struggles still? I hardly think so, but there hope.
