Online payments - a help or hindrance to business?

Introduction

In today's digital age, online payments have become integral to business operations. From e-commerce giants to small local shops, businesses of all sizes are embracing digital transactions. However, the question remains: are online payments a boon or a business bane?

Benefits of Online Payments

  • Increased Convenience: Online payments offer unparalleled convenience for both businesses and customers. Customers can purchase from the comfort of their homes, while businesses can process transactions quickly and efficiently.
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: A seamless online payment experience can significantly improve customer satisfaction. Customers appreciate the ease and speed of digital transactions, which can lead to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth.
  • Expanded Market Reach: Online payments allow businesses to reach a broader customer base, including those who lack access to traditional payment methods. This can help enterprises increase their sales and revenue.
  • Improved Efficiency: Online payments can streamline business operations by reducing the time and effort required for manual payment processing. This can lead to increased productivity and cost savings.
  • Enhanced Security: Modern online payment systems employ advanced security measures to protect customer data and prevent fraud. This can help businesses build trust with their customers and mitigate financial risks.

Challenges of Online Payments

  • Technical Issues: Online payment systems can be susceptible to technical glitches and downtime, disrupting business operations and frustrating customers.
  • Security Risks: Despite the security measures in place, online payments are still vulnerable to cyberattacks and data breaches. Businesses must invest in robust security measures to protect themselves and their customers.
  • Transaction Fees: Many online payment providers charge transaction fees, affecting a business's profits.
  • Integration Challenges: Integrating online payment systems with existing business software can be time-consuming and complex.
  • Limited Control: Businesses may have limited control over online payment transactions, as they rely on third-party providers to process payments.

Conclusion

While online payments offer numerous benefits for businesses, they also present challenges that must be carefully considered. By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of digital transactions, companies can make informed decisions about leveraging online payments to enhance their operations and improve customer satisfaction.

Mobile Phone Usage for Business

When considering business and the use of telecommunications, one thing that is being used increasingly is the mobile phone. Some people are competent in the use of their devices; for the most part, many aren't.

When observing how people use their mobile phones, it oftentimes makes me wonder if they have given consideration as to the use of their device. Some people use their phones as unpaid comedians to forward jokes. Others send graphics that do not, shall we say, coincide with their branding. Some people are just seemingly lawless and will waste your data plans without any regard for the fact that they are costing you money needlessly.

Here are some scenarios that mobile phone users tend to engage in:
  • They call you and ask you to call them back since their credit is about to run out. Really? Who wants to make contact with whom?
  • WhatsApp calls for business reasons. The call quality is choppy in many instances and does not make for high-quality interaction that at least seems professional.
  • Then, they are those with the prepaid phones that run out in the midst of a conversation. Guess what, postpaid is always the cheaper option. Don't be afraid of the commitment.
  • The sending of non-business related graphics also ranks high on the list of not to-dos.
  • Purchasing mobile phones that cost more than a computer and then not possessing the ability to use the features is more than a little off-putting. I liken it to purchasing the Mercedes with its high powered engine and speed abilities; only to drive it at 25 kph on the highway.
If used well, mobile phones can be a game-changer for business people. Here are some examples:
When you consider your business planning, examine if you're using your mobile technology optimally.  You just may be surprised at how much you can save, but more importantly how your earnings can be enhanced if you use the technology properly.

Businesses need multiple resources in the same category

Increasingly, there's going to be a need for businesses to work more in clusters. This is even more so since the pandemic crisis. This raises a few questions though in the minds of seemingly successful entities that others will seek to work with:
  1. Can we deliver working with the members of this team?
  2. How fast can we make shifts to protect, secure and enhance our reputations?
  3. What are our legal obligations should we have to make pivotal changes?
  4. How can we ensure the end-user does not waste their investment in using our services?
We have all been on teams where team members want to share in the rewards but offer as little effort as possible towards the final outcome. Dealing with this type of individual can be quite challenging; especially when seeking to meet and exceed the needs of the client.

Every time you work your reputation is on the line. Are you reliable? Is your work of a high quality/calibre? Will you work have the impact that encourages others to speak positively of it so that you get referrals as a result of your more recent efforts?

Legally we should meet all the obligations of our contracts which we would have been a part of the negotiation process. It is necessary that all team members operate with honour in fulfilling their elements of the work.

The circumstances are even more demanding of accountability regarding money spent. Items once deemed miscellaneous will now have closer attention paid to them. Greater care will be taken when considering expenses and assets expenditure.

So who's on your team?

Are they interconnected so that they work as one? Are your accountabilities on point? These are questions that you must ask and answer to ensure that you have the necessary fail/safe's in place. When you really examine your operation, you too will realize why it is important for businesses to have multiple resources in the same category.

Techniques to grow your business

There's good news if you are seeking to grow your own business now. If you are serious about having a successful business, you must be well planned. Regardless of whether you intend to operate post-pandemic or if you were operating from before the pandemic; there are certain processes that would be rudimentary to your success.

Let's address the big one that keeps people up at night continually.
  • Finances - It may be a bit more difficult to obtain finances in this current environment, at least on the surface. Before the pandemic, it was still "challenging" to obtain funds. It was like getting blood from stone in some cases. Who is on your financial planning team?
  • Marketing - Needs to be well thought out and insightful. Your business needs to be going within a direction that will encourage your public to want to interact with you for the products/services you are offering. In the past, many of you tried to do this alone only to fail dismally. Who is on your marketing team?
  • Operations - We have witnessed entities putting programs together that just didn't gel. It seemed like the organization was unprepared for their own efforts. Information wasn't communicated internally and the result was poor execution all around of an effort that was to hopefully bring about positive results. Who is on your operations team?
  • Management - There are too many solo operations which result in areas of importance falling through the cracks. Apart from the aforementioned, we must also consider legal, human capital, administration to mention a few others. It begs to question, who is on your management team?
Your teams must add value to your business. They do not need to be employed on a full-time basis, but what you need access to is their knowledge, skills, abilities, and hopefully contacts. You must be willing to pay for these resources. In the past, those who struggled most are those who thought the payment for information was too expensive, they quickly found out the alternative of not paying to access what the business needed was way more expensive.

There are way too many businesses functioning by hunches rather than having well thought out and practical plans. Be different and don't fall into that category. Seek the help you need. Learn the techniques necessary to grow your business.

UNDER RESEARCHED...

There are lots of people seeking to get into a business. Conversations with many of them will reveal that these people have some pretty good business ideas.

Further discussion can be quite the insight into the fact that there are more ideas available than the research that goes into them. In short, many of the businesses are not where they should be in terms of the research that's necessary. Therefore they are totally unprepared for the hiccups.

In business, you cannot be myopic only planning for the perfect picture that you have visualized that business will happen exactly like that daily. Once you are alive, storms will come through ever so often; sometimes earlier / later. There's just no sure-fire formula.

How do you ensure that your business is shovel ready? In other words, if you were being processed right now to access funding for your business, have you eliminated all of the setbacks that can halt the process? Should you get the funding right now, how fast can you mobilize to implement what you requested the funding for doing?

When business owners are asked to present about their business, and they are cross-examined, it is when many realize that they are not as prepared as they thought. Sole proprietors suffer most with this as they have not built a team which would enable them to benefit from another perspective.

Do you know the following for your business? Here are some questions that will need to be answered regardless of what business you are in:

  • How much money do you need to begin your business on the right scale that would enable you to meet your objectives head on?
  • If you have to get investors, what are you willing to offer them / receive from them as a part of the total investment package?
  • Do you know how investment/financing works and recognize the differences among them?
  • Who forms a part of your team and what experiences/influences are they bringing to the table that can enhance your business and enable it to gain traction in the market?
  • Do you have a full complement of professionals that you can access? [accounting, financial, legal, marketing, business advisory services, operations]
  • How will you handle shocking changes in your business' environment? Especially those that weren't considered in your SWOT analysis.
  • Do I, as an entrepreneur, have what it takes to orchestrate this and where can I quickly find help?
These seven are not the only questions, however, they are key considerations for your business' development.

Well....do you still think that you have the best business concept, or do you still need to put in some more work? How well do you know your business and the industry within which it will function? Do you know that you will not have all the solutions, and who are you willing to partner with to arrive at the necessary solutions?

Always keep in mind that not all money is good money. Don't get overconfident in your dealings with the members of the public you serve.

Remember that the research you put in is not a one-time effort as your environment is always changing. Your research needs to keep up to date lest you become extinct.

Think in terms of possibilities. You were given that idea download for a reason; how best will you exploit it? Looking forward to reading about your lessons learned down the road. Plan to be the winner you set out to be.

The Business of Begging

BEGGING is fast becoming an epidemic. Quite recently, I was begged many times in one day and it got me thinking about what's really happening within our society. Are things really that bad? I'm sure that we have varying opinions.

Images of countless incidences of begging throughout my lifetime in various countries flooded my head. Some categories of beggars stood out.

  • The sympathetic beggar - always with a hard luck story. His / her situation can be a real tear jerker. They can really pull at the emotional strings like the most skilfull of puppeteers.
  • The brand name beggar - met this one overseas. I noticed that he was dressed better than I was in terms of clothing - no mixed brands (E.g. Nike etc.) Everything was uniform throughout. They speak really well.
  • The classic beggar - cigarette in the corner of the mouth and drink in hand.
  • The vagrant beggar - those with whom we are most familiar. Homeless seeking their next meal.
  • The list can go on.
I've heard stories of beggars lending people money in some significant sums to purchase cars and homes. So now that I've been enlightened that begging's a business, it opens a whole new dimension for me.

Effective immediately, people begging me would need to provide the following:
  1. A proposal outlining why they're begging and how the money that they beg for will be utilized.
  2. A proforma invoice, which shows the amount for which they're begging
  3. A tax clearance certificate so that I can see they're contributing their share of taxes.
Personally I don't believe that I'm being overly harsh since in many instances they have more money than I do. Daily I have to hustle and even though earning my keep am not always paid for it; especially in these current times. Yet, I can't play dead and give up, but must try to find replacement money which does not involve begging.

While growing up in the era that I did; we were taught not to beg and the consequences that will follow if we disobeyed. Yet nowadays, lots of people including those gainfully employed are doing it quite unashamedly.

There, I have gotten my thoughts off my chest without resulting in bad behaviour. Stop begging for if there are any vacancies and start asking for work. There are still ways that you can earn an honest dollar.

Communication and Diplomacy - They are needed more than ever given the global dynamic

You've hit on a crucial point. In our increasingly interconnected world, the ability to forge strong international relations isn't...
